I used to live in Abuja when Glasgow Scotland and Abuja Nigeria, bided for which country will host the 2014 Common Wealth Games.
I remember that day so well now as I monitored the whole process live on the Television. I so much wanted Abuja to win the bid, not only as a patriotic Nigerian but considering that other continents have hosted it in the past. I thought Abuja would set the pace for the African continent to host the games in order to complete the circle of games. The Games, which fosters unity amongst former British colonies, has gone round other continents except Africa that played prominent role during the dark days.
Again, Nigeria celebrates 100 years of nationhood in 2014, it would be nice to commemorate the event with the hosting of the Commonwealth Games.
I was very heartbroken when Glasgow won the bid over Abuja.
Since the time of that bid, there has been great turn of events in my life. I now live in Glasgow and even married a Glaswegian. (Glasgow name for their indigenes)!
Having lived in Glasgow for six years and integrated with the people of Glasgow, I can fully understand why Glasgow won the bid and what hosting the Common Wealth Games means to them.
I am so delighted to be in Glasgow at a time like this, and I join millions of Scottish citizens to fly the Scottish flag and shout 'let the games begin'
The City of Glasgow will host the Common Wealth Games from the 23rd July to the 3rd August.
