In the wake of the death of the U.K.’s monarch, the internet has been abuzz with talk of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, whose every move has been subject to intense public scrutiny and criticism. Since her split from the royal family, the public has only intensified their hatred and annoyance towards Meghan, with many of the most vocal critics being women.
The criticism of Meghan has been relentless, ranging from comments about her black ancestry to more personal attacks, such as calling her a “whore” and a “manipulative bully”. A study conducted by a company looking at 114,000 hate tweets about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex found that many of the tweets contained racist content and called for physical harm.
In her bombshell Oprah interview in 2021, Meghan directly addressed the double standard of this by telling the iconic talk show host: “You have to be very careful about the language you’re using. Because when you’re talking about a biracial person, especially in the U.K., you’re talking about someone who’s a black woman.”
The hatred and animosity towards Meghan has been so pervasive that it has become a source of confusion and frustration. It seems that no matter what she does, Meghan is met with vitriol and derision. Despite her attempts to adhere to the expectations of the royal family, she is still met with criticism and hate.
The intense scrutiny and hate that Meghan Markle has faced is disheartening, and it is difficult to ignore the racism that lies beneath the surface. The double standards and unfair expectations placed upon her are unjust, and it is time for the public to recognize Meghan for who she is: a strong, resilient woman who is simply trying to make her way in the world.
